Metal Detecting is a Hobby that Pays You Back

Usually, hobbies are those things that, while providing a sense of accomplishment and fun, end up COSTING money. Take scrapbooking, for example. I pour lots of money into my supplies– papers, stickers, fancy cutters– and while it’s definitely not a waste to spend hours doing something I thoroughly enjoy, it’s definitely not a cheap way to pass the time. Friends who make their own jewelry say the same thing about their hobby.
But then there’s treasure hunting– as in metal detecting. Once the detector is purchased, and maybe headphones if you want them, the expense is over. Yet the detector continues to find coins, rings, necklaces, and maybe someday I’ll even dig up a gold doubloon or other priceless antique! Seeking long-lost treasure appeals to almost anyone– the entire family can get involved. It gets everyone outside together, provides a little exercise, and the thrill of discovery is quite the bonding experience.
One of my favorite places to detect is around the swings, slides, and monkey bars at local parks and schools. Kids and their parents seem to lose quite a bit change while playing, especially quarters, which all adds up! I’ve also found a couple of rings and necklaces. And, of course, I refill every hole I dig. Detecting on beaches is even easier since the objects are in sand and not dirt. A scoop with holes in the bottom allows sand to flow out and the treasure to stay in! I once helped a man locate the cell phone his kids had buried in the sand while he was napping. They “forgot” where they buried it. He didn’t think it was so funny, but the situation ended well for the kids since I happened along with my detector.
You can take the treasure hunting hobby seriously and initially invest a lot into a detector and accessories, or not so much and use it just a few times a year. But whether you spend $100 or several hundred, learn to use your detector properly and you undoubtedly WILL find metal treasures. And little by little, your piggy bank will thank you for choosing a hobby that pays you back. Good luck!

You can make good money gold prospecting and gold panning, too. Doesn’t cost a lot to get started either.
